Easy way to photograph and separate background

Is there an easier way to separate the background of a picture besides the pen tool? A photography salesman told me that he just right clicks on the picture, selects import and changes the background that way (He said he used Photoshop CS). That does not work with Photoshop 6. He also told me to photograph on black background that it would be easier to just import a different background. Please let me know the most efficient way to do this?
