the tutorial has been set out rather weird. Anyways the 'creating a gradient' thing is the image above. when they say 'edit' they mean edit the gradient by clicking on the gradient you have chosen (top left small bar with drop down menu of the gradients available, photoshop 7). add markers by using the right mouse button.. hope this helps :)
