I did this one myself, and I understand it's a little tricky here. I found it easiest to use the single row and single column slection tools in "Add selection" mode to create the shape I wanted (across a little, up a little, across the rest of the way, like in the example) then use the rectangular selection tool in subtract mode to get rid of the extra selection. Alternatively, you could zoom way in and use the rectangular selection tool on a few one-pixel wide sections, across, up, then down, to get your selection. When he says crooked he's just talking about that little notch in the line. Good luck!
