The best solution for transparency is a GIF image. Created in Photoshop, a GIF image can be saved to preserve transparency after the layers are collapsed. Make sure when you save the image, you've turned off any background fill layer, so that what you want to be transparent is truly transparent (filled with that weird little checkerboard pattern Photoshop uses). Save as a GIF, and look for a checkbox about transparency. Make sure it's on before you save. You should get what you're looking for.
