As compared to books, there are lots of sites out there which have got very good tutorials on Photoshop and other softwares. Buying a book on a software might not be a good investment due to its high cost low shelf life due to the fast upgrades. Surf around and am sure you would come across many great sites with step-by-step assistance...Have fun !
