Hi Adrian. Try my "Separation" tutorial. This will show you how to remove the image's background. To save it with no background, you'll need to delete the background layer in Photoshop (if there is one). If your main image actually IS the background layer, just duplicate it and then delete the background layer. Next, you'll need to click File > Save for Web. Only gifs can have transparent areas, so you'll need to save it as a gif. Remember that the edges will be jaggy, where the solid image meets the transparent area - there are no partially opaque pixels, like there are in Photoshop.
