Hi Michelle. When using the Freeform Pen Tool, make sure you select the "Paths" option at the top left of the screen. If you have the "Fill Pixels" option selected, the area will just fill with colour. This shouldn't affect any deletions you make. I'm not sure where the white area you've created is, but you can always go back and redo that step if something goes wrong :)
