Hi Fred. :) If you just merge the cells in your web editor (or just start with one big cell), and put your image in it, you won't be able to put text in it. If you make the whole thing a background, you won't be able to make your buttons clickable. There are also other issues. The idea of the Slice Tool, is that you use it to draw boxes on your image. When you save your image for the web (File > Save for Web), each of those boxes is saved as a separate picture file. I'm actually in the process of writing a tutorial that covers the use of the Slice Tool. :)
