I've had to do something like this as well. What you should do is goto Office Depot or Staples where they have (or atleast they do near me) larger scanners. Or if you wan't something cheaper because those will run your 10 bucks at most, goto Brooks (Osco whatever it is called now) if you have one in your area, and use their Kodak machines. Bring a cdr with you. Then scan it and choose to save the picture to the cdr (cdrw's won't work ive tried). The machines I have mentioned aren't big, so you might not be able to scan the whole painting, if it is really big, but you should be able to narrow down the number of images you'll need to splice together.
