Hi Clay. Probably the easiest way to make a grid is by defining a pattern. First, create a new, square image, maybe half a centimetre square. Change your background colour to black, then click Image > Canvas Size, and increase the height and width by two pixels. This will give you a white image with a thin black border. Then press Ctrl+A to select everything, and click Edit > Define Pattern. Now make a big image, and click Edit > Fill, and choose Pattern. Choose your pattern from the "Custom Patterns". This will fill the whole area with that pattern, creating a grid. Then use Ctrl+U and Colorize to change the colour of the image to a more realistic colour.
